An American in Paris synopsis
Set against the backdrop of the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II, the story follows former G.I. Jerry Mulligan. As he attempts to start a new life as an artist after the long night of Nazi oppression, Jerry meets French shopgirl Lise Dassin. They proceed to sing and dance into each other’s hearts in a brilliant new world where everything seems possible.
Soon, obligations forged in the old world throw a shadow over the new lovers, as Lise is torn between promises to the man who saved her family from the occupiers during the war and her hopes for a brighter future.
An American in Paris history
The book, filled with witty and lively dialogue, is by Craig Lucas and adapted from Alan Jay Lerner’s original screenplay. Classic selections from George and Ira Gershwin’s incredible chapter of the Great American Song Book, such as “I Got Rhythm,” “The Man I Love” and “They Can’t Take that Away from Me,” fill the recognizable soundtrack. The award-winning Christopher Wheeldon choreographs and directs.
The idea for the movie first came to famed Hollywood producer Arthur Freed when he heard George Gershwin’s orchestral piece “An American in Paris.” Gershwin composed the atmospheric song as an ode to his time in the Jazz-Age Paris of the Roaring ‘20s.
Freed liked the title and the music and hatched the idea of a musical adaptation incorporating some of the famous songs by composer George and his lyricist brother Ira. The musical was developed by director Vincente Minelli, star Gene Kelly and screenwriter Lerner. The film won six Academy Awards on its way to becoming one the most famous movie musicals of all time.
The title cut became the backdrop for an incredible, show-stopping and climactic 17-minute ballet sequence created and choreographed by Gene Kelly for the film. This scene has been adapted, in his own fashion, by Wheeldon for the stage musical.
With so much singing and dancing involved, the stage musical adaptation was a natural move. The show premiered in Paris in December 2014. It opened on Broadway in April 2015 and closed in October 2016. A London premiere followed the next year.
During its run on Broadway, the show won four Tony Awards. It also won several Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, among others.Similar to An American in Paris
