An American in Paris
George Gershwin’s music and award-winning choreography take center stage in this musical that follows the story of American soldier Jerry Mulligan in post-war Paris. Right after World War II, Jerry considers staying in Paris to pursue his love of painting. After he encounters a mysterious woman, he decides to stay. With a little help from fellow veteran Adam Hochberg and Henri Baurel, the son of a wealthy French industrialist, he sets out to pursue his dreams. A short time later he meets his mystery woman, French ballerina Lisa Dassin. Joy turns to sadness when he discovers she is the woman he and Adam have encouraged Henri to propose.
In Paris, Jerry continues to pursue his love of painting. His luck turns positive when he’s introduced to the vibrant Paris art scene. The future becomes clear for Jerry and Henri. Lise finds herself facing a choice between love and devotion. As she performs in a ballet destined to establish her fame as an accomplished artist in Paris, she realizes where her heart lies. As the curtain falls, she sets off to meet her future.
In 2015, An American in Paris won four Tony Awards including Best Choreography. The production also won a Drama League Award for Outstanding Production and received Outer Critics Circle, Theater World, Drama Desk, ”ACCA” and Fred and Adele Astaire Awards.
