An American in Paris
A production full of beauty and hope, award-winning director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon combines the lyrical genius of George Gershwin with graceful choreography to draw audiences into the story of American soldier Jerry Mulligan in post-war Paris. Immediately following World War II, Jerry finds himself in Paris where he decides to stay to pursue his love of painting. Friend and fellow veteran Adam Hochberg and Henri Baurel, son of a wealthy French industrialist, help Jerry settle in. As he sets out to pursue his dreams, he meets a mystery woman. She is French ballerina Lise Dassin and happens to be the woman he and Adam have unknowingly encouraged Henri to propose.
Jerry’s future gets a boost when he gets an unexpected introduction into the vibrant Paris art scene. As the paths for both Jerry and Henri become clear, Lise finds herself with a choice between love and devotion. As the curtain falls on the ballet that establishes her as an accomplished dancer, Lise leaves the stage and sets off to meet her future.
Critics and audiences agree An American in Paris delivers romance, love and optimism in a stunning performance. The Wall Street Journal proclaims, “It’s been years…since I last saw production numbers infused with the rich, sustained creativity…throughout ‘An American in Paris.’” Variety declares, “a dancer is a thing of beauty, and there is beaucoup beauty in director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s ravishing production.” The Financial Times raves, “I would beg, borrow or steal to see it all again.”
The debut production stormed Broadway, winning four 2015 Tony Awards including Best Choreography. The show added the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production as well as Outer Critics Circle, Theater World, Drama Desk, the “ACCA” and the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards.
