Based on the 1997 Don Bluth animated film starring Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammar and Christopher Lloyd, Anastasia reimagines the legend of Anastasia Romanova, the youngest daughter of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II. While the real Anastasia died at the hands of the Bolsheviks in 1918, the musical version creates an alternate fairy tale history in which amnesiac Anastasia survives into adulthood. By coincidence, she meets up with two con men who attempt to pass her off as an imposter in order to collect a reward from the surviving Dowager Empress of Russia, the mother of Nicholas II and Anastasia’s grandmother. Audiences in Tennessee can catch a live performance of Anastasia whenever it comes to town.Journey to the Past
Anastasia is not just a straightforward adaptation of the film. Playwright Terrence McNally, who won Tony Awards for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime, reworked and expanded major facets of the story while writing the book for the musical. In place of the scheming mystic Rasputin, McNally substituted a new antagonist, a Bolshevik general named Gleb, who is tasked with tracking down and killing Anastasia. Stephen Flaherty, who received two Academy Award nominations for his work on the original 1997 film, returned to score the new soundtrack for the musical. After a brief tryout period, Anastasia made its Broadway debut at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 24, 2017. It closed two years later on March 31, 2019, after 808 performances. The Broadway production received two nominations from the 2017 Tony Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Featured Actress in a Musical. It received another 13 nominations from the Outer Critics Circle Awards and nine nominations from the Drama Desk Awards, winning one award each for Outstanding Projection Design.Where can I buy Anastasia Tennessee tickets?
