Andrea Bocelli was born on 22 September 1958 in Lajatico, a farming village in Tuscany about 25 miles south of Pisa, and music took hold early. He started piano lessons at age six and went on to learn the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. A Franco Corelli record from his childhood nanny pointed him toward the tenors, and by age seven he could recognize the famous voices of the day and emulate the great singers. He won his first singing competition at 14 with "'O sole mio" at the Margherita d'Oro in Viareggio, then took a detour that surprises many fans: he studied law at the University of Pisa, spent a year as a court-appointed lawyer, and paid his way through school performing evenings in piano bars.
His break came through a demo tape. In 1992, Italian rock star Zucchero auditioned tenors to record "Miserere" for Luciano Pavarotti to hear, and Pavarotti's response was to urge Zucchero to keep the unknown singer for himself. The song became a hit across Europe, and Bocelli spent the 1993 Zucchero tour winning audiences over with solo turns on "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's Turandot. After posting the highest marks ever recorded in the newcomers' preliminaries, he won the newcomers' section of the Sanremo Music Festival in February 1994 with "Il mare calmo della sera" on a record score. That same year brought his debut album of the same name, certified platinum in Italy within weeks, and his opera debut as Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa.
More than three decades later, Bocelli has recorded 15 solo studio albums of pop and classical music, three greatest hits collections, and nine complete operas, selling over 90 million records worldwide. His 1997 compilation Romanza ranks among the best-selling albums of all time, and Sacred Arias became the biggest-selling classical album by any solo artist in history, a run so dominant that he held the top three spots on the US classical albums chart at once and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. His album Sì, released in 2018, debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. Duets like "Time to Say Goodbye" with Sarah Brightman and "The Prayer" with Celine Dion carried classical crossover onto pop charts around the world. That catalog is the backdrop for every Andrea Bocelli concert and the reason Andrea Bocelli tickets appeal to opera loyalists and pop fans alike.
