In 19993, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen started a metal cover band. They were all Finnish cellists who had met at school. While fans enjoy Apocalyptica's instrumental music, the group's most popular songs often feature vocalists such as Corey Taylor of Slipknot ("I'm Not Jesus") and Adam Gontier, formerly of Three Days Grace ("I Don't Care"). Working with mainstream musicians helped Apocalyptica garner some of the spotlight, but it was their talent that kept the band there and proved that symphonies and metal are the perfect pair. Their sound makes them popular at festivals such as Rock in Rio.
More Than Metallica Now
Apocalyptica may have been covering metal in a classical style before anyone else attempted it. The group's first album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, consisted solely of Metallica cover songs. By their third album, the band was releasing mostly original music. While Apocalyptica has gone on to achieve worldwide success and sell over 4 million albums, the band's reach was initially small. Their first album only charted in Finland, and tours remained in Europe. However, each subsequent album charted in an additional country until the fifth, Worlds Collide in 2008, landed on the Billboard 200 in the United States, thanks to the contributions of Taylor, Gontier and others.
