The Golden Lions Football team first organized in 1915 at Branch Normal College. In 1927, the school changed its name to Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College (AM&N), The first intercollegiate sports were organized, and the lion became the mascot of the teams in 1927. In 1972, the college merged with the University of Arkansas System, and it became the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). In 1991, the UAPB football team won two national championships.
