Asaf Avidan originally worked in the animation industry, but decided to reinvent himself as a full-time musician after breaking up with his long-time girlfriend. His first album, an EP release entitled "Now That You're Leaving," features six songs about that breakup. The singer/songwriter has come a long way in a relatively short time, and now performs in high-profile venues with some of the world's most legendary artists. One of the highlights of his career came in 2010, when Avidan performed with Bob Dylan at a Carnegie Hall tribute concert honoring The Who.
As the frontman for Asaf Avidan & the Mojos, the Israeli-born singer/songwriter first gained acclaim on his own as a solo acoustic artist before putting together his popular Mojos band in 2006. After touring extensively throughout Israel, the group made their first American appearance at the MEANY Fest in New York in 2007.
In 2011, the band announced that they would take a creative break. Since then, Avidan has continued a solo career, touring throughout the world as a soloist and also in performances with other internationally known artists.
On the international scale, Avidan's biggest breakthrough came in 2008 with the release of his album "The Reckoning." Featuring 15 songs with deeply personal lyrics about love and loss, the album appealed to millions of fans because of its fresh, innovative blend of folk and blues styles infused with the energy of classic rock. "The Reckoning" reached platinum status and became Israel's biggest-selling indie album. Shortly afterward, Avidan joined forces with techno-pop artist Wankelmut to produce a remixed release of the album's title song, "One Day/Reckoning Song," which immediately became a No. 1 chart-topper around the world.
In addition to "The Reckoning," Asaf Avidan & the Mojos had great success with their second album, "Poor Boy/Lucky Man" (2009), a theme album that dealt with the issues of fortune, misfortune and money. The band's third album, "Through the Gale" (2010), is another thematic album that tells the story of a blind ship's captain who travels with his crew to the realms of the gods to find immortality. In the end, he learns that life with no death, and a journey without a home to return to, are both equally meaningless. In 2012, Avidan released his first solo album, "Different Pulses."
Both as a soloist and with his band, Asaf Avidan is no stranger to the world's stages. He has performed in some of the most famous venues in the world, including New York's Carnegie Hall and the Folies Bergère in Paris. He has also shared the stage with legends such as Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and Lou Reed and is considered by many to be one of the great torchbearers for independent music. Avidan is also a favorite at international music festivals, including the Les Escales du Cargo in Arles, France, the TED Global Festival in Edinburgh and Crazy Week in Nice.
