In late spring and early summer soccer fans in the Atlanta area have plenty to be excited about as the North American Soccer League season gets under way and the Atlanta Silverbacks look to move up the tables. The history of the Silverbacks dates back to 1994 when they entered the APSL as the Atlanta Ruckus. The Silverbacks joined the NASL in its inaugural season in 2009 but did not play in the league until 2010 after the league was sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation. In 2012 the team hired former US National Team star Eric Wynalda as a temporary head coach and he began to lead the team to the top of the league standings immediately. Atlanta Silverbacks North American Soccer League
The North American Soccer League may seem familiar to long time soccer fans despite forming in 2009 and not playing any official games until 2011. The league is named after an earlier soccer league which played from 1968 to 1984. The Atlanta Silverbacks have been a member of the current NASL, which features teams in the United States and Canada and is a member of CONCACAF, since its inception. Games against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, the New York Cosmos, and the Minnesota United FC provide excellent examples of just how much passion the players of the NASL bring to the pitch each game. While the MLS gets more attention from the national media, the skill and intensity on display during a top NASL match simply cannot be beat.
Up until late 1994 the Atlanta Silverbacks were known as the Atlanta Magic and were slated to play in the American Professional Soccer League and were set to star former all-time US National Soccer Team scoring leader Bruce Murray, but in November of that year the team agreed to play in the USISL indoor league, changed their name to the Atlanta Ruckus, and made drastic lineup changes including losing Murray who wanted to play outdoor.
