Nicknamed the Wallabies, Australia played their first international match in 1899 against a touring British Isles team and eight years later played their first test against New Zealand Rugby. The country established themselves as a dominant force in the game during the 1980s, a period in which they defeated all four Home Nations to win the Grand Slam, won several Bledisloe Cups, and finished fourth in the inaugural world tournament. Australia went three places better in the 1991 event, beating England Rugby Union in the final, and comfortably defeated France Rugby Union in 1999 to lift the trophy for a second time. In the early ‘00s, they picked up their first ever Tri-Nations Cup, won their first series against the British and Irish Lions, and finished runner-up in the 2003 world tournament. A team of many home grounds
