Babbacombe Theatre is an integral part of the local community, helping to develop and nurture local talent. The theatre itself grew out of the original bandstand on the site, which was built in the early 1920s. It was augmented by a canvas awning in the 1930s in order to accommodate larger crowds of spectators, but this flimsy arrangement made for some windy performances, with the result that a more permanent larger building was constructed in 1938, and named the Babbacombe Downs Concert Hall. The modern theatre came about after a refurbishment in the mid 1980s. It's since made a strong name for itself by staging highly popular musicals, and fans of the world's most famous pop artists have made a point of regularly visiting the venue to take in show like Thank ABBA for the Music and the Fleetwood Bac tribute band.
