Barbarians: rugby's greatest honour
The pride and prestige associated with the Baa-Baas makes it an honour for players to earn a call-up, while their long-vested traditions are one of the great facets in the game of rugby.
Formed in 1890 by an enterprising Cambridge University student called William Percy Carpmael, the invitational side is unique to the sport of rugby. Players from all nations are called up to play for the side, wearing the famous black and white hooped kits but with socks; from their home club.
The only criteria for selection are a player's skills and off-field behaviour, which must be exemplary. Although the Baa-Baas began their tours with matches against club sides, in the modern era their focus is on international sides, and they have strong records against some of the biggest nations in the game.
Perhaps their most famous moment came in the 1973 victory over New Zealand, with Gareth Edwards finishing off a remarkable team move to score against the All Blacks in what has since been labelled 'the greatest try ever scored'.
