The official kickoff to the Memphis in May International Festival, the Beale Street Music Festival is a three-day experience that offers some of the best music from various genres. Now one of Memphis, Tennesse's largest festivals, it was first held in 1977 at the corner of Beale Street and Third. In 1978, production was turned over to the Memphis in May International Festival, generally called Memphis in May, and it became one of the first signature events for this traditional month-long celebration. In 1990, due to its growing size, the Beale Street Music Festival was moved to its current location in Tom Lee Park where the iconic Beale Street meets the Mississippi River. Over the years, the festival has included notable artists such as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Snoop Dog, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Cake, Luke Combs, Chevelle, Third Eye Blind, Anthony Russo, Big Boi, and Everclear.
Beale Street: Birthplace of the Blues
Beale Street, the original site and namesake of the festival, began its musical roots in the 1860s with traveling musicians performing along the street. In 1890, the historic Orpheum Theater was added hosting a wide range of musical performances over the years. In 1903, the mayor of Memphis invited W.C. Handy, known as Father of the Blues, giving rise to the Memphis Blues style. Since 1920, Beale Street has hosted musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Muddy Waters and in 1977, an act of Congress declared Beale Street "Home of the Blues."
