Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is based on the true story of the early life and career of the singer and songwriter Carole King, who has written more than 100 hit songs on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, including "You've Got a Friend" and "It's Too Late." Carole King has won four Grammy Awards for her 1972 album Tapestry plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. She is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Douglas McGrath, who directed the films Emma, Company Man and Infamous, adapted her story for the stage. The musical features some of the most famous Carole King songs plus a collection of other songs from the era. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical made its debut at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, California, on October 8th, 2013. It transitioned to Broadway's Stephen Sondheim Theatre on January 12th, 2014, before embarking on a US tour. The original Broadway production in which Jessie Mueller starred as "Carole King" received seven nominations from the 2014 Tony Awards. It won two awards, including Best Sound Design and Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Mueller. It also won three Drama Desk Awards out of six total nominations. Jessie Mueller won the Outstanding Actress award, and Anika Larsen won the Outstanding Feature Actress award. The 2015 Grammy Awards recognized it as the Best Musical Theater Album, beating out Aladdin and West Side Story. The original London production won two Laurence Olivier Awards out of eight nominations. Katie Brayben won Best Actress in a Musical, and Lorna Want won Best Actress in a Supporting Role.Back to Top
