The Story of Beautiful The Musical
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the story of the fascinating early life and career of Carole King, one of pop music’s greatest performers and songwriters. The musical features songs written by King, often together with her former husband Gerry Goffin, as well as other contemporary songs by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector and more.
The show begins in 1959, just before Carol King composes her first hit song, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.” At the time, she is 17, pregnant and newly married to lyricist Gerry Goffin. Over the next decade, King and Goffin produce a series of classic hits while developing a long-lasting friendship with Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, another composing couple.
After Carole’s personal life begins to unravel, she creates Tapestry, an album that consists of a deeply personal collection of songs. Released in February 1971, it became one of the best-selling albums ever produced.
The original production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical premiered at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in October 2013. It made its debut on Broadway in January 2014 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a collection of great music combined with an inspiring story. It showcases classic hits like “Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Up on the Roof.”
The songs are delivered in a theatrical context that illuminates Carole’s rise from a shy teenager to an international star. In this performance, much emphasis is placed on the friendship between King, Goffin, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.
The music and lyrics blend beautifully with the book by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Douglas McGrath (Bullets Over Broadway, Emma), direction of Marc Bruni and choreography of Josh Prince, creating a unique musical that all audiences will be inspired by, whether they’re Carole King fans or not.
