About Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Beautiful follows the life of Carole King as she begins her musical career. King’s musical journey commenced when she was a teenager working to find her own voice. In spite of the struggles life contained for King, her compositions gave generations of youth a soundtrack for their love and lives.
The musical opens with a sixteen-year-old King disobeying her mother’s wishes and heading to Manhattan to sell her song, “It Might As Well Rain Until September.” The song is a hit, and King’s life changes quickly as her skill and popularity develop.
When she attends Queens College, King meets her future husband and collaborator, Gerry Goffin and soon becomes pregnant, marrying Goffin shortly after. King and Goffin join forces on songs for The Drifters, The Shirelles, Janelle Woods and many other famous performers.
As her marriage dissolves, life’s struggles force King to find her own voice. The musical concludes with a performance of King’s hit song “Beautiful.”
More than 1000 artists have recorded upwards of 400 of King’s songs. She co-wrote many works with Goffin, but her solo work made her truly beloved by fans.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be performed in Tempe’s premier Broadway venue, Arizona State’s Gammage Theater. Not only is this venue home to such renowned institutions as Broadway’s “Progressive” program and the ASU Gammage Beyond series but it also has the distinction of having been designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
