Beauty and the Beast - The Story
Beauty and the Beast is a timeless story of love and friendship that has been translated into hundreds of versions throughout the world. The traditional fairy tale was written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and first published in France in the mid-18th century. Of the many interpretations of the original French version, Walt Disney’s is one of the most widely known and cherished.
Disney’s 1991 Beauty and the Beast film became an instant hit and was one of the first to use computer-generated graphics. It won Academy Awards for Best Song and Best Original Score and made history when it was the only animated feature ever to be nominated for Best Picture.
Disney’s classic love story tells the tale of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town who loves to read and explore, and a Beast, who is a young prince trapped in a spell that an enchantress has placed on him and his castle’s servants. For the spell to be broken, the Beast must learn to love and also be loved as a beast.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast stage musical opened at the Palace Theatre in New York City in April 1994 and experienced incredible success. It enchanted theatergoers on Broadway for over 13 years and became the seventh longest-running musical in Broadway’s history.

A "tale as old as time," it delights audiences again and again with its grand costumes and sets, memorable characters and remarkable production numbers that include favorites such as "Be Our Guest," “Something There” and the beloved title song.

Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was over 50 years in the making. Disney first attempted to develop the timeless tale into an animated film in the 1930s and again in the 1950s. He eventually gave up because the writers found the story too difficult to adapt.
