The Belasco Theatre opened as the Stuyvesant over a century ago. After giving up the 42nd Street theatre in 1910, owner David Belasco re-branded the Stuyvesant as the Belasco Theatre we know today. Belasco believed that part of the effectiveness of a live performance depended on how close audience members were to the cast of a production. Therefore, most Belasco Theatre events have a sort of "living room" feel to them. The Belasco venue has hosted numerous, famous performances in the past, includingÊThe Rocky Horror ShowÊin 1975 and Sondheim'sÊFolliesÊin 2001. Its more recent lineup includes renditions ofÊNetworkÊproductions. The rich history of the venue even includes speculation that Belasco himself may have haunted the location.
