Born Benjamin Chase Harper in Claremont, Calif., Ben Harper is a multidisciplinary musician, singer-songwriter and activist. Harper's genre-defying sound is a one-of-a-kind mix of rock, blues, jazz, funk, folk and reggae. The singer's distinctive voice is both raspy and melodious. Harper is also a guitar and slide guitar player, piano player and keyboardist, drummer, percussionist and bass player. Although he had been gigging since age 12, Harper's official start was in 1992 when he released a limited edition album with folk musician Tom Fruend entitled Pleasure and Pain. The artist soon signed with Virgin Records and promptly released his freshman album, Welcome to the Cruel World, in 1994. The album was well received both locally and abroad. Harper's second album, Fight for Your Mind, exploded across college campuses in 1995, gaining the artist a nearly cult-like following. Since then, he has gone on to release 11 more albums, tour internationally and locally and become an advocate for global social justice.
