Since 2004, Bestival has been held in the south of England, organized by producer and DJ Rob da Bank. After growing from 10,000 attendees in 2004 to over 55,000 people in 2010, this award-winning festival continues to grow. What was once associated with Dorset, England, has spanned across the globe, with annual dates in Toronto and Bali.
With a heavy-hitting lineup year after year, Bestival's past performances have included Rag 'n' Bone Man, Florence + the Machine, Bastille, Grimes, Skepta and many more. Being the perfect modern festival, it continues to grow and adapt to the present time.
Bestival was originally a UK-based, four-day festival held on The Isle of Wight. Though it was selected for many reasons, the co-founders admit that the natural beauty of the area made it an easy choice. It wasn't until 2016 that the festival moved to the Lulworth Estate in Dorset.
Well-known for their 'fancy dress'-themed days, by 2010, festival goers set a new Guinness World Record for the most people in fancy dress at a single event. Although this vibrant festival focuses on music and positive energy, Bestival works with a number of charities and organizations. Being a founding member of the Greener Festival Alliance, Bestival is also known to be eco-friendly.
Nothing short of quirky, Bestival has sometime even seen a blowup church where festival goers can get married. Year after year, big names hit the stage, including Fatboy Slim in 2004, Röyksopp in 2005, Gogol Bordello in 2006, the Beastie Boys in 2007, Amy Winehouse in 2008, Massive Attack in 2009, Prodigy in 2010, Björk in 2011, Stevie Wonder in 2012, Snoop Dogg in 2013, Outkast in 2014, Duran Duran in 2015 and Jamie T in 2017.
In 2015, Bestival expanded to Toronto with performances by Nas, Flume and Flosstradamus. The following year, the second Bestival Toronto took place at Woodbine Park. Headliners included The Cure and Tame Impala. In 2017, Bestival Bali was added to the roster, featuring Alt-J and De La Soul.
Since its debut, Bestival has received a wide range of awards. At the UK Festival Awards, Bestival won the Best Medium-Sized Festival in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. They also received Best Innovation in 2005; Best Major Festival in 2010, 2012, and 2015; and Fans Favorite in 2011.
Outside of the UK Festival Awards, Bestival has also won DJ Mag's Best of British Awards 2012: Best Festival; Artrockers Awards 2012: Festival of the Year; AIF Festival Congress Awards 2014: Smart Marketing Campaign of the Year; and Live Music Business Awards 2014: Best Festival (capacity 40,000+).
