Big Country Biography - Songs From the Highlands
Reaching international recognition during their '80s high point, this Dunfermline outfit was formed by lead singer Stuart Adamson in 1981. Having recently left punk band The Skids, Adamson was on the lookout for a new band and after 8 months of rehearsing in an abandoned warehouse the new set-up spawned fresh material and played some local buzz gigs.
Releasing their first single 'Harvest Home' in 1982, they made their first entry on the singles chart. Follow-up 'Fields of Fire' was an even bigger success, reaching a top ten position and debut album The Crossing soon followed. Selling over a million copies in the UK, the LP was an international hit and saw the band play both the Grammys and Saturday Night Live. The following three albums saw the band focus their energies on the UK, where they became more of a cult concern as the years advanced. After playing what they thought was a final gig in 2000 they split to focus on other projects. However, in 2007 the group reunited for the 25th anniversary, with Tony Butler picking up singing duties after Adamson's tragic death in 2001. Releasing a new album and going on tour again, they've since proved a hit at festivals such as Isle of Wight and Hard Rock Calling.
