Big East Conference Championship TicketsThe Big East Conference Championship is a four-round tournament that takes place in mid-March between the end of the regular season and the start of the NCAA Tournament. Though the winner of the tournament does receive special recognition, it is not just for bragging rights. It also determines who will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament regardless of whether the selection committee would otherwise choose that team. The Big East Conference was originally founded in 1979 with seven major basketball schools from New England and the East Coast states, including national champions Georgetown, UConn and Syracuse. Three-time national champion Villanova joined the conference a year later. Following conference realignment in 2013 and the departure of several longtime members, the Big East split off to form a non-football conference. It now consists of 10 teams spread out across the Midwest and the East Coast, from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., to Providence College in Providence, R.I. What is the format of the tournament? The Big East tournament takes place over four separate rounds. However, to accommodate all 10 teams, the format is a little different from what you might be used to. Each team is seeded based on its regular-season conference performance. The first round matches up the last four seeds against each other: eight vs. nine and seven vs. 10. The top six teams all receive a bye. In the second round, the winner of the eight vs. nine-game plays the top seed, and the winner of the seven vs. 10 game plays the second seed. The 4th and 5th seeds play each other, and the 3rd and 6th seeds also match up. The winners of these four games play in the semifinals. The two teams to emerge from the semifinals then play in a championship game. All games are single elimination. The winner of the conference tournament often, but not always, differs from the regular season champion, which makes it a unique honor to win.
When does the 2020 tournament take place? The 2020 Big East Conference Championship schedule takes place over a four-day span between March 11th and March 14th. The tournament is divided into individual sessions, each of which consists of one or two games. Every round is represented by a single session with the exception of the second round quarterfinals, which are divided into two separate sessions.
Who is participating in the tournament? The Big East tournament involves every team from the conference, so no matter how the program finished the regular season, the teams will each have a chance to make the NCAA Tournament by winning three or four straight games. The conference is well-represented in the 2019-2020 preseason AP polls, including Villanova at No. 10, Seton Hall at No. 12 and Xavier at No. 19. Creighton, Providence, Georgetown and Marquette also received votes just outside of the top 25.
How big is Madison Square Garden?Located in Midtown Manhattan, the historic Madison Square Garden has an approximate seating capacity of 19,500, including courtside seats, club seats and modern suites. The arena features plenty of bars, concessions, restaurants and lounges, and you can also experience all of the attractions in the surrounding New York area. The Big East first partnered with the venue in 1983 to host the annual tournament. It is the official home of the New York Knicks basketball team.
Who are some of the past winners of the Big East tournament?Since conference realignment, Villanova has dominated the most recent Big East tournaments in 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2015. Other winners include Seton Hall in 2016 and Providence in 2014. Prior to conference realignment, Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, Pitt and St. John’s all won the tournament at various times.
