Big Ten Hockey Tournament TicketsThe Big Ten Tournament is an annual postseason hockey competition that involves every team from the conference. Though the Big Ten was originally founded in 1896, making it the oldest Division I college conference in the United States, it only began to sponsor a conferencewide competition in men’s hockey during the 2013–2014 season. Prior to this, many of the teams played NCAA Division I hockey without competing in a Big Ten competition. Hockey is very competitive in the Big Ten due to the unique history and makeup of collegiate ice hockey, which is heavily over-represented by northern teams. The six founding members of the conference were Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State, all of whom are members of the Big Ten in other sports. The Notre Dame hockey joined the league as an associate member in 2017, bringing the total up to seven, though other Fighting Irish teams maintain league independence. Many of these hockey teams had played together in previous leagues such as the WCHA and its predecessors. Get your Big Ten Hockey Tournament tickets at StubHub.
What is the format of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament? The Big Ten Tournament takes place over three weekends. Teams are seeded based on the number of points they have acquired in regular-season conference play. Tiebreakers come into play when multiple teams finish with the same point total. The tournament opens up with a best-of-three quarterfinals series, meaning that each matchup features a maximum of three games, and the first team to win two games advances to the next round. The top seed receives a bye through the first round. That leaves the remaining six seeds to compete in the quarterfinals. The three winners then advance to the single-elimination semifinals. The lowest remaining seed plays the top seed, while the second-highest seed plays the other team. The two teams that win the semifinals matchup advance to the championship game. Overtime rules differ from the regular-season game. If a tournament game is tied at the end of regulation, then it will go into a 20-minute 5-on-5 overtime period.
When does the Big Ten Tournament take place? The 2020 Big Ten Hockey Tournament schedule is set to begin on March 6 after the end of the regular season on Feb. 29. The quarterfinals take place March 5–8. This is followed by the semifinals on March 14 and a championship game on March 21. The NCAA Tournament begins on March 27.
Which venue will host the Big Ten Tournament games?During every stage of the tournament, the highest seed will always serve as the host for the games. This gives home fans an opportunity to catch their favorite team. This format was instituted for the 2017–2018 season. Before then, the tournament took place at a neutral location and an NHL venue such as the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota.
Who was the winner of the previous tournament? The winner of the 2019 Big Ten Tournament was the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Coached by Jeff Jackson, the team beat Penn State by a score of 3–2 in the championship game. It was their second straight tournament championship, making them the first Big Ten team to repeat as champions in back-to-back seasons.
What is the reward for winning the tournament?Similar to college basketball, the winner of the Big Ten Tournament receives one of the six automatic bids to compete for the national championship in the NCAA Tournament. The conference itself determines how the automatic bid is awarded, but every conference has chosen to award it through the conference tournament. It is a common occurrence for the regular-season champion to differ from the tournament champion. In these situations, the conference champion is very likely to be selected for an at-large bid. For most teams, however, the conference tournament is the only route to the NCAA Tournament, which contributes to its overall importance.
