A slow start for a smash hit musical
Big The Musical had a somewhat stuttery start. It was well-received by critics during its initial six-month run on Broadway in 1996, but it wasn't much of a commercial success. Despite being nominated for a very respectable five Tony Awards, it had to be almost completely rewritten by the original playwrights before it went on tour in an attempt to recoup losses. The rewrite worked, and the musical became an international success, finally winning audiences over. The show only reached UK shores in 2016, and was very well received, playing two separate residencies, in Plymouth and Dublin. Its West End debut was at the Dominion Theatre in Camden, where once again audiences who bought Big The Musical tickets were charmed by the by now highly polished script and music – not to mention the excellent choreography and performances. The original cast included a few interesting faces: Irwin Sparkles of The Hoosiers and X Factor winner Diana Vickers, for instance, playing opposite the amazingly versatile Gary Wilmot, MBE.
Stars from pop bands performing with an orchestra
The London staging of Big The Musical has also been studded with UK stars of stage and small screen. The lead role of Josh has been taken on more than one occasion by boy band frontman Jay McGuiness, of The Wanted fame, who also won Strictly Come Dancing in 2015. In a similar vein is Kimberley Walsh, who has played the role of Susan, building on her career that took off in spectacular fashion when she joined Girls Aloud after winning ITV's "Popstars". The rest of the cast has been in a dozen or more West End shows and musicals. Big The Musical has been paired with almost a full orchestra, which has elevated the musical aspect of the show to the realm of grand theatre. The stage props will be instantly recognisable to anyone who loved the movie. Zoltar the fortune-telling robot is there and some of the numbers have come to be performed on a massive floor piano, adding an extra dimension to the dance routines. All in all, Big The Musical tickets promise a fabulous night on the town. Get them on StubHub.
