How did it all start?
Bullfighting in Spain dates back a long time, over a thousand years, to 700 A.D. The first official bullfight to take place in the country is confirmed to have happened in 711 A.D. in honour of the coronation of King Alfonso VIII. This bullfighting tradition is also said to have links to the Roman gladiators, since Spain was once part of the Roman Empire. The bullfights in Bilbao can trace their origins to the late 19th century, with the first bullring (which had a capacity of over 12,000 people) being established in 1882. This historic bullring was destroyed in a fire in 1962 and the bullfights were then moved to the Plaza de Toros de Bilbao, which can hold nearly 15,000 people. The Bilbao Bullfighting Festival is a highly anticipated event and it tends to sell out quickly, so make sure you book your Bilbao Bullfighting Festival tickets early on StubHub to avoid being left out of the fun!
