About Black Lips
Who would ever thought that surf punk would have wound up in Atlanta Georgia and become the next giant leap in the genre? The Black Lips would be just those people. In the early half of the 2000's the founding members of the Black Lips would find themselves kicked out of high school--as a "Subculture Danger" for their rude behavior and likeness to the Columbine Massacre--and left with no other option but to rock! In the true spirit of DIY punk rock the band's beginnings were that of teenage angst and a fraction of actual musical affinity. The Black Lips would rely more on wild stage antics to mask the inability to play music until later when they began to learn their respective instruments. Founding members Cole Alexander guitarist, Jared Swilley bassist, Ben Eberbaugh guitarist, and Joe Bradley drummer, had all been around the Atlanta punk scene since high school and early college, when all four came together to form their own band is when something amazing happened. The band found that their blues heavy southern fried surf punk was the type of music that people needed to hear, and by 2002 the Black Lips would have their first 7 inch release which would have the seeds to their first album "Black Lips" an amazing piece of punk music as well as a touching tribute. Sadly, while the band was just beginning in 2002, guitarist Ben Eberbaugh was struck and killed by a drunk driver before the band could begin their tour for the 7 inch. The band felt that they should still go on citing that it's "What Ben would want us to do."
The band's lineup would see a rapid amount of changing as punk bands go with friends marrying, settling down, or just going to do other things in life. By 2007 the Black Lips would find themselves with a couple of albums and the ever popular "Good Bad Not Evil" which would launch them into the main music scene after years of underground fame. "Good Bad Not Evil" would be the album that defined the band's sound as well as have enough pop hits to bring them larger musical attention. Not ones to succumb to the newly found fame, Black Lips continued to play up their stage antics with chickens, male nudity, and vomiting which has found the band in trouble with the law now and again. Though they may be underground hopefuls that made it to the main stage of music, most of the band members have little side projects that have allowed them to stay invigorated when they need breaks.
Likely to be considered the Black Lips magnum opus, "Good Bad Not Evil" would be the album that brought the black lips to the head of the alternative music scene. An appearance on The Conan O'Brian show would broadcast hits, "O Katrina" and "Bad Kids" to millions of homes nationwide securing the Black Lips rise to fame. True fans will also remember the Black Lips first single off their 7 inch "Ain't Coming Back."
The reason the Black Lips took to puking on stage was not only because of their affinity towards G.G. Allen but because lead singer Cole Alexander has a medical condition that causes the vomiting. Their debut album through Vice Records instead of their own in house label was a live album that is said to have been captured at a concert in Tijuana Mexico. The album "Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo" has had rock myth added since the recording of the album feels too produced to be live which has led to music fans and friends argue both sides. The Black Lips would also flee the country of India after some of their baser stage antics left them in fear for their life. The show in question had some of the band members kissing and pulling out genitalia in the extremely anti-homosexual country.
