Blackpool FC - a historic seaside club
Renowned for their bright orange strip, seaside club Blackpool FC became one of English football's leading sides during the post-war era, largely thanks to the prowess of the legendary Stanley Matthews. Check out the range of Blackpool FC tickets available on StubHub.
From Stanley Matthews to Ian Holloway
Formed in 1887, Blackpool FC joined the Football League nine years later but enjoyed their golden period half a century after that. Boasting goal-scoring hero Stanley Matthews in their line-up, the Tangerines reached the FA Cup final on three separate occasions in the immediate post-war era, winning the trophy in 1953 after beating fellow North West side Bolton Wanderers 4-3. That same year, four Blackpool players pulled on the England shirt for the Three Lions' encounter against Hungary, while in 1956, the club achieved their highest ever placing, second in the First Division behind Manchester United. Blackpool added to their trophy cabinet in 1971 with the Anglo-Italian Cup and went on to win the Football League Trophy in 2002 and 2004 before achieving promotion to the Premier League under charismatic boss Ian Holloway for the first time in 2010. In 2017, they became the first ever English side to win five play-off finals when they beat Exeter City at Wembley Stadium to achieve promotion to League One. Local rivals both old and new
Home to Blackpool FC since 1901, Bloomfield Road is a 17,000-capacity venue that features three stands named after the club's most famous players, Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortensen and Jimmy Armfield. It has welcomed arch rivals Preston North End through its gates more than 50 times over the years, while Fleetwood Town's promotion to the Football League in 2012 also gave the Tangerines an ever-closer neighbouring league team. Strikers Nathan Delfouneso and Mark Cullen, both of whom have made over 100 appearances for the club, journeyman DJ Campbell and one-time Liverpool FC midfielder Charlie Adam are just a few of the notable names who have pulled on the famous orange shirt during the side's topsy-turvy league journey in the 2010s, while the likes of Matt Phillips, Tom Ince and Kevin Mellor have all been named in the PFA Team of the Year.
