The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is named after a slang term used to reference police officers who accepted bribes to turn their heads to the illegal activities carried on in the speakeasy establishments of the prohibition days. The Blind Pig opened its doors in 1972 as a European-influenced cafe, featuring a diverse food menu, espresso/cappuccino, along with homemade soups, crustini and a full wine and beer list. And first-class blues music was served on the entertainment menu. To learn more about this venue and Ann Arbor's Crisler Center, visit StubHub! StubHub touts tickets for these venues and more!
Partners Jerry DelGiudice and Tom Isaia refurbished an old building in downtown Ann Arbor to be the new home of the Blind Pig. DelGiudice also started Blind Pig Records in 1975 to underline many of the groups who held regular gigs at the club. The record label is still operating today! DelGiudice and Isaia sold the club in 1979 to Dave Whitmore. Three years later, Whitmore turned around and sold the venue to Roy and Betty Goffett. The club's space was doubled with a renovation of the rear portion of the building under the Goffetts' ownership. The expansion enabled the club to accommodate such renowned acts as Joan Baez, Bo Diddley and George Thorogood. Since then, the Blind Pig has drawn a steady stream of talented musical artists. Blind Pig is associated with some amusing fun facts. For instance, did you know that Ann Arbor earned the No. 7 spot in a 2003 Rolling Stone Magazine feature, Campus Scenes that Rock, primarily because of the Blind Pig? And in 1989, up-and-coming band, Nirvana, played at the Blind Pig to their biggest audience yet. A few years later, Nirvana was interviewed on MTV, citing the Blind Pig as their all-time favorite venue. To commemorate the band, the Goffetts created a tribute by the entrance to the club.
