What is the NASCAR experience like?Going to the racetrack is usually action-packed and intense. Does the sound of over 40 screaming race cars racing only inches apart and at speeds of over 180 mph sound like a good time? If so, you will be right at home at the Southern 500. Whether you are a first-time attendee or a lifelong fan of racing, you can expect a weekend of excitement and thrills. A NASCAR season features 38 races spanning 10 months. Each race is made up of three stages of excitement.
What is Darlington Raceway like?Darlington Raceway is nicknamed "the Lady in Black" or "the track too tough to tame" for its unique egg shape. Unlike a traditional oval, this extraordinary egg shape makes it difficult for teams to tune their cars to handle well at both ends. This results in very wild and out-of-control racing that makes for an exciting show. The track owes its unusual shape to the man who owned the property the raceway was built on, Sherman Ramsey. Ramsey was fine with having the track built on his property as long as construction workers didn't disturb his minnow pond at one end of the track. Doing so resulted in the raceway being narrow on one side and wide on the other. The Raceway spans 1.366 miles and has four turns.
What is Throwback Weekend?Since 2015, NASCAR has made Throwback Weekend a part of the festivities at the Southern 500. During the race, teams use vintage and throwback-inspired paint schemes on their race cars. The first throwback weekend in 2015 saw teams uses 1970s-inspired paint schemes. Last year, the theme was 1990-1994. For 2020, the theme is past champions. Each team will paint their car based on one of their champions from a previous season.
What are some of the biggest milestones of the Southern 500?Perhaps the most significant milestone of the Southern 500 occurred in 1985 after driver Bill Elliot won the Winston Million (now known as the Grand Slam). In 1984, Winston put out a million-dollar prize for any driver who could win three out of four major speedway events (The Daytona 500, The Winston 500 at Talladega, Alabama; the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina; and the Southern 500 at Darlington). In 1985, Bill Elliot won Daytona, managed to win at Talladega despite mechanical trouble and won at Darlington. Winning the Winston prize helped propel him to stardom, and he earned the nickname "Million Dollar Bill."
How many laps are in the Southern 500?The Southern 500 is made up of 367 laps. Historically, drivers raced all 367 laps in one shot. Since the creation of stage racing, the race has been conducted in three stages. The first stage sees drivers race 100 laps as does the second stage. The third stage features 167 laps to the finish.
