Folk band Bon Iver began as a therapeutic solo project of musician Justin Vernon, recorded while he recovered from mononucleosis hepatitis. Fresh from a breakup and battling the disease attacking his liver, Vernon recorded a lamentful folk album titled For Emma, Forever Ago, which was self-released in 2007 then widely released on the Jagjaguwar label in 2008. Bon Iver turned an indie following into fame with TV appearances in 2009 on "Late Show with David Letterman," "Austin City Limits" and "Grey's Anatomy." In 2011, the band released its second album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, which debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It was followed by 22, A Million in 2016 and I,I, which is slated for release in August 2019.
Skinny Love From Wisconsin
The long period between Bon Iver's third and fourth albums occurred because the members took a break from the band to focus on their other musical projects. Vernon performed with The Shouting Matches and Volcano Choir during the break. One thing has kept the band working together throughout their career, and that is soundtracks. Starting in 2009, Bon Iver contributed to film and TV soundtracks. That year "Roslyn" was on The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack. The Chuck soundtrack featured three Bon Iver songs, "Blood Bank," "Creature Feature" and "Skinny Love." "Flume" was heard on the BBC show "The Street." "The Wolves (Act I and II)" graced both the TV series "United States of Tara" and the movie The Place Beyond the Pines. The band performs many of these songs live. It also sometimes performs live collaborative works it recorded with other artists. These include "Brackett, WI" recorded for the "Dark Was the Night" AIDS benefit album; "Lost In the World," "Monster" and "Dark Fantasy," all collaborations with Kanye West.
