Borussia Dortmund is one of the most storied football clubs in Europe, founded in 1909 in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. Known as BVB or Die Schwarzgelben (The Black and Yellow), the club has built a legacy defined by dramatic European nights, a relentless commitment to developing young talent, and one of the most passionate supporter cultures in world football. Their home, Signal Iduna Park, is the largest stadium in Germany with a capacity of over 81,000 and draws the highest average attendance of any football club on the planet.
Borussia Dortmund has won eight German league championships and claimed the UEFA Champions League in 1997 with a 3-1 victory over Juventus. That final produced one of European football's most iconic moments when 20-year-old Lars Ricken chipped the goalkeeper from over 20 yards out just 16 seconds after entering the match. The club also won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1966, becoming the first German team to lift a European trophy, and added the Intercontinental Cup later in 1997 after defeating Cruzeiro of Brazil.
Under Jürgen Klopp from 2008 to 2015, Borussia Dortmund won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, set a league points record with 81 in 2011-12, and completed the domestic double by beating Bayern Munich 5-2 in the DFB-Pokal final. Klopp's squad also reached the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley Stadium. The club's reputation for identifying and developing emerging players, built under sporting director Michael Zorc, has made BVB a consistent contender in both domestic and European competition.
