Brandy Clark is an American country music singer and songwriter. She is known for her simple, intimate live shows, during which she sings and plays the acoustic guitar or piano.
Brandy Clark's history
Brandy Clark was born in a small town in Washington in 1975. Growing up, she enjoyed the country-pop hits of the 1980s, as well as more traditional, older country music. She cites Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline among her early influences. She began playing guitar at age nine and sang in school musicals. She started writing her own songs at a young age, encouraged by her mother, a fellow musician.
In 1988, Clark moved to Nashville to study commercial music at Belmont University, and after graduating, she gained a publishing deal with Leadership Music, a local company. However, it wasn't until the 2000s, when Clark was in her 30s, that she started getting cuts on albums by well-known artists. During that decade, her songs were recorded by Kenny Rogers and Reba McEntire, among others. Her breakthrough as a songwriter came in 2011, when Miranda Lambert achieved success with the single "Mama's Broken Heart." The following year, The Band Perry reached No. 1 with one of her songs, "Better Dig Two."
Clark's songwriting success came when she began collaborating with fellow writers Shane McAnally and Kacey Musgraves. The trio worked together on songs for several artists, including Musgraves' own debut album, Same Trailer Different Park. Their collaborations included the popular 2013 single, "Follow Your Arrow." Around the same time, Clark started to make progress with her own music career, with achievements including performing at the Grand Ole Opry in 2012, and being showcased by CMT as one of their Women of Country.
Clark released her debut album 12 Stories in 2013 to great critical acclaim, which led to a deal with major label Warner Bros. Records for her 2016 follow-up, Big Day in a Small Town. She also released a live album, allowing listeners to experience a Brandy Clark tour. Clark's best known songs include "Girl Next Door," which reached the top 40 on the Country Airplay Chart, and the witty single "Stripes," which was accompanied by a fun music video. Clark has received many accolades for her work both as a songwriter and singer. She has been nominated for six Grammys, two ACM awards and three CMA awards.
