The Lerner and Loewe musical tells the fantastical Scottish legend of a magical village. Audiences observe as Americans Jeff Douglas and Tommy Albright are hunting in the forests of the Scottish Highlands when they encounter the town known as Brigadoon. Although already engaged to another, Tommy falls in love with a local maiden named Fiona. Tommy becomes heartbroken when Fiona tells him that she cannot leave the village to be with him in New York. He also learns that the enchanted village only appears once every century. The town was enchanted hundreds of years ago and remained unchanged throughout the years. Although the village exists for the local residents, outsiders may only see Brigadoon when it appears on its centennial anniversary. Locals are forbidden to leave. For if someone leaves, the enchantment ends along with the town and all of the residents. On the other hand, visitors are welcome to stay if they are willing to sacrifice their lives in the outside world. The Story Behind the Brigadoon Legend
In 1947, Alan Jay Lerner wrote the story and the lyrics for the songs. Fredrick Loewe wrote the music. The musical premiered at the Ziegfield Theatre the same year. The name for the musical has different theories. Some hold that the story was named after the Celtic goddess Brigid. Another theory involves the name being borrowed from the Scottish landmark bridge called Brig o' Doon. Scottish poet Robert Burns referenced the location in one of his works. Brigadoon might also come from the Celtic language. Briga reportedly means town and dun means fortifications.Where can I buy Brigadoon tickets?
