The Greatest Gift to a MotherBright Star is a musical that looks at two distinct periods in the life of Alice Murphy. The first peek at Alice's life is when she is a barefoot young girl growing up in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountain. The musical returns to view Alice as a successful magazine editor living in Asheville, N.C. more than two decades later. Alice was head over heels in love with the mayor's son, Jimmy Ray, as a teenager. Jimmy's parents looked down on Alice and were disapproving of the love the two teenagers shared. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to keep Jimmy and Alice apart. Alice eventually gave birth to a son that was taken away from her shortly after birth. Twenty-two years later Alice hires a young man who is a talented writer. His name is Billy and he also comes from the same hometown as Alice. Alice begins to see things in Billy and his story that leads her to the conclusion he is the son she lost long ago. Bright Star was received well by critics and theatergoers alike. The show's first run included 139 performances and was nominated for a Grammy in 2017 for Best Musical Theater Album.
