Brix and the Extricated Tickets
Formed in late 2014, Brix and the Extricated was put together by various former members of the Fall, the seminal indie and experimental band from Manchester led by Mark E Smith. As of 2017, the band comprises Brix Smith-Start, Steve Hanley, Paul Hanley, Jason Brown and Steven Trafford. The group first played in order that their performance coincided with the publication of Hanley's autobiography, essentially to promote it. Hanley had been a long-standing member of the Fall, providing bass arrangements for the band between 1979 and 1998. To many fans, it was Hanley's distinctive basslines that made the huge variety of sounds used over the Fall's career come together as a cohesive body of work, in spite of that band's experimental nature. Therefore, the formation of Brix and the Extricated appealed to many former Fall fans who were looking for a new band that could give them some of the sounds they were yearning for.
Brix and the Extricated's performance style
Although the early gigs put on by Brix and the Extricated were made up of the Fall's back catalogue, the band would be incorrectly viewed as a mere tribute band. This is because the group tend to play tracks that were co-written by members of Brix and the Extricated and Mark E Smith when they were members of his group. Since the Fall had a seemingly ever-changing lineup of musicians, Brix and the Extricated is a very different experience sonically.
In addition, Brix and the Extricated does not feature Smith in any way or attempt to replicate his style. His distinctive vocalisations are missing from the music the band plays. Thirdly, the repertoire the band draw from for the majority of their shows tends to focus on the 1980s Fall tracks, when many members of the group were working with Smith. Since Smith continues to perform new ideas and songs with the Fall rather than plunder his back catalogue, devotees of what many consider to be the Fall's heyday are not catered for by their gigs. By contrast, Brix and the Extricated play classic tracks, such as “New Big Prinz”, “2 x 4”, “Cruiser’s Creak” and “Mr Pharmacist”, among others. Lastly, by 2016, the band began to write new material for its sets, such as “Something to Lose”, which was released on Blang Records as a single.
In terms of vocals, the indie band features Smith-Start as the lead singer. Born in 1962, Smith-Start is an American who settled in the UK when she joined the Fall and married its singer in 1983. Smith-Start is perhaps best known for her singing and guitar work on the Fall's Perverted by Language album.
