Buena Vista Social Club's history

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members' club in Havana, Cuba in the 1940s; a popular venue for live music and dance, and a meeting place for local musicians. Although it closed at the end of the decade, the club inspired Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonz��lez and American guitarist Ry Cooder to release 1997's Buena Vista Social Club, a record featuring musicians who had performed at the club in its heyday.

Buena Vista Social Club was met with worldwide acclaim upon its release thanks to its fascinating backstory and authentic sound, transporting listeners back in time. It proved a word-of-mouth hit, appealing even to those who wouldn't otherwise have dabbled in world music.

Performances in Amsterdam and New York (at the famed Carnegie Hall) were captured the documentary Buena Vista Social Club, released in 1999 to critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

Many of the performers from the original Buena Vista Social Club were elderly by the time the album and film were released, and sadly several of them passed away soon after achieving this latter-life success, including familiar faces from the film -- Compay Segundo, Rub̩n Gonz��lez and Ibrahim Ferrer. However, they died knowing that they had opened a new international interest in traditional Cuban and Latin American music, no longer limited to the Latino pop stars of the time.

Since the '90s, Barbarito Torres and "Guajiro" Mirabal have continued to perform under the name of Buena Vista Social Club. Since the original Buena Vista Social Club LP of 1997, two further live albums have been released, in addition to many solo records by the group members.
