The Buzzcocks officially formed in 1976 at the Bolton Institute of Technology. The initial lineup consisted of Pete Shelley, Howard Devoto, Peter McNeish, Garth Davies, and Mick Singleton. In 1976, Shelley and Devoto both traveled to London in order to see a band that had been receiving a great deal of attention – the Sex Pistols. The two musicians were immediately enamored with the infectious energy and excitement that the Sex Pistols brought to the stage, and they decided that this energy is exactly what their band needed, and in July 1976, the Buzzcocks opened for the Sex Pistols in Manchester.
By the end of 1976, not only had the Buzzcocks performed on the same stages at the Sex Pistols, but they had also become the first punk group to form an independent record label to release their own music. Later, when the group underwent some lineup changes and signed to United Artists Records, they started to release some of their most popular singles, including "What Do I Get?" and "Shot By Both Sides". In 1981, the Buzzcocks disbanded when Shelley decided to embark on a solo career. For almost an entire decade, the various members of the Buzzcocks pursued other musical projects. When they reunited in 1989, the band was better and more excited than ever to bring their punk rock anthems to the world. While the group's lineup has changed numerous times throughout the years, the current lineup is said to be the best yet, and includes Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle, Chris Remmington, and Danny Farrant.
