Cabaret Denver Tickets
Cabaret is a musical that first opened in 1966—the year it also came to Broadway for its initial run there. Adapted from a play by John Van Drutan, which was, in turn, inspired by a novella by Christopher Isherwood, the musical was created by Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb. The story is set in a seedy nightclub in Berlin in 1931 on the eve of the Nazi’s rise to power. It delves into how the political developments of the time affect the characters.
Despite the unconventional structure and staging of the show, it became a hit and inspired many subsequent productions and revivals both on Broadway and London’s West End, as well as national touring companies. It has subsequently played around the world. Through its history, Cabaret has been nominated for many prestigious awards and in many categories, including a slew of Tony Awards, of which it won several, such as Best Musical and Best Original Score in its original run, and even more awards in subsequent incarnations.
The characters are also unconventional for the time it was written, ranging from homosexuals to prostitutes, as the seedy nightclub was presented as such. The musical has proven to be both adaptable in changing how the show is staged and in taking advantage of changing mores and what audiences will accept on stage. Unconventional aspects include the main character of the Emcee as a “highly sexualized” individual, introducing characters in drag and simulating sex on stage.
A film version of the musical, loosely based on the original 1966 production, was made in 1972.
The Buell Theatre is a 2,800-seat theater that is the highest-grossing venue of its size in the country. It is the largest and “most versatile” of the theaters that comprise the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The Buell Theatre opened in 1992 and is host major Broadway show tours; Cabaret is simply one of a long line of famous musicals to play here.
