Cage the Elephant is an American-made rock band from Bowling Green, Ky. that formed in 2006. Just one year later, after performing at the 2007 South By Southwest music festival, they caught the attention of producers at Relentless Records and soon signed their first major record deal. Having moved to the Leyton area on the outskirts of London, the band released their self-titled album, Cage the Elephant on June 23, 2008, for their fans in the UK and wouldn't release the record in the US until April 12, 2009. They went on their first tour as a supporting act for Queens of the Stone Age and would later do the same for Pigeon Detectives in 2008, and the Manchester Orchestra in 2009. Over the years, Cage the Elephant has released five studio albums. Their debut album, featuring their chart-topping hit, "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked," reached the number 32 spot on the UK Singles Chart and was also featured in the popular video game Borderlands.
You Have To Cage The Elephant
Fans often ask how the band came to call themselves Cage the Elephant in the first place. According to lead vocalist, Matt Shultz, the group was approached by a mentally unstable fan after a show in 2006. The man hugged Matt and incessantly repeated the phrase, "You have to cage the elephant." The moment was so random and unforgettable that the group decided to use the phrase as the name of their band, and the name stuck ever since.
