The Cal Poly men’s basketball team has several notable players and coaches. Keith Wheeler was from the class of 1984. His peers were Jim Schultz and Kevin Lucas. Schultz and Wheeler still hold records with the college basketball team. Schultz is known for a record 295 assists in the 1981 season. Notable coaches include Joe Callero, Kevin Bromley, Jeff Schneider, Steve Beason, Ernie Wheeler (father of Keith Wheeler), Neale Stoner and Stuart Chestnut. The current head coach is John Smith, which the school announced after the 2017-2018 dismal season. Smith has six years of experience as an associate head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Over the previous three seasons, the Cal Poly rivals went to the Big West Championship two years in a row and averaged 18 wins each season. Smith is credited with helping to build that program. He replaced Joe Callero after last season's weak performance.
