About the Festival
The Calgary Folk Music Festival (CFMF) is an annual jubilee that takes place at Prince’s Island Park, in Alberta, Canada. Each year, the program features close to 100 industry icons and fresh faces from nearly 20 countries on at least eight stages, belting out their tunes in concerts and collaborative sessions.
What sets this festival apart is its genre-defying, continent-linking alliance of singers, performers, creative troubadours and master instrumentalists, as they come together in celebration of diverse traditions, deep roots and cool grooves.
According to the CFMF Facebook page, this festival is “a village where indie singer-songwriters, roots and country veterans and blues masters rub sonic shoulders with global electronica divas, Latin rhythm masters, Ukrainian rock bands and Congolese hipsters – where on-the-fly collaborations create once-in-a-lifetime magic in a verdant urban setting.”
For the aspiring artist, each year the festival holds a series of three-day intensive workshops at the National Music Centre in Calgary. Attendees who sign up for the workshop will have one-on-one time with several of the festival artists, who will give lessons in songwriting, music arrangement, vocal techniques and even guitar. This three-day Folk Boot Camp allows both the instructors and the participants to develop their skills—and get a little constructive feedback, too.
Well-known names like k.d. lang, the Decemberists, The Avett Brothers, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Ani DiFranco, Blue Rodeo, Emmylou Harris, Iron & Wine, The Pornographers, Lucinda Williams, Marty Stuart, The Deep Dark Woods and more have graced the stage at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Other top-notch performers from more than 11 countries include Bonnie Prince Billy + Bitchin Bajas, Kathryn Calder, The Cave Singers, Cat Power, Kacy & Clayton, Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, Oysterband, Amelie Patterson and more!
