As the largest city in Alberta and one of Canada's major cultural capitals, Calgary offers a great array of attractions and year-round events. Visitors and locals enjoy the city's scenic setting between vast prairies and the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, which afford opportunities for winter sports and summer mountain biking. Calgary is famous for hosting its biggest annual event, the Calgary Stampede, which takes place over 10 days in July and comprises a rodeo, exhibition and festival. Calgary's major performing arts venue is the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, known as "the Jube." It presents performances by the renowned Alberta Ballet Company and Calgary Opera, as well as Broadway musicals and concerts by world-famous artists.
Performing arts companies based in Calgary include the One Yellow Rabbit theater company and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, which both present productions at the Arts Commons Building, plus Theatre Calgary and Theatre Junction GRAND.
Sports fans know Calgary as the home of the NHL's Calgary Flames and the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. Both maintain long-running rivalries with their counterparts in Edmonton, the Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Eskimos. When the two cities' sports teams meet, the exciting games are billed as the "Battle of Alberta."
