Where is the FanShield 500 held? The FanShield 500 NASCAR Weekend is held every spring at Phoenix Raceway. Constructed in 1964, the racetrack was designed as an open-wheel racing track, set against the backdrop of the Estrella Mountains. The new track replaced the old racetrack at the Arizona State Fairgrounds and soon became a favored racetrack of the time. Things became exciting at the track in 1988, when it held some of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races. Today, the raceway hosts various NASCAR races, such as the NASCAR FanShield 500 in the spring and the NASCAR Championship Weekend in the fall. The track is approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) long and is a D-shaped tri-oval. The venue seats 76,800 and is owned by NASCAR, which bought out former owner International Speedway Corp. for $2 billion in May 2019. Due to being built at the foot of a mountain range, the track has a unique "dogleg" curve in the middle of the backstretch. Turns 1 and 2 have a bank of 11 degrees, and Turns 3 and 4 have a bank of 9 degrees.
