In May 2017 after his victory over Julio César Chávez Jr. Alvarez immediately announced his fight with Golovkin for September with a location to be determined at a later date. With his trainer, Abel Sanchez, and promoter ,Tom Loeffler, Golovkin entered the ring to confirm the fight and begin promotions.
Three days later, the president of Golden Boy Promotions stated that Alvarez had a rematch clause in his contract should he lose, but should Golovkin lose, he was not guaranteed a rematch. Later, Oscar De La Hoya revealed that the fight would be fought at the true middleweight weight of 160 pounds and there was no re-hydration clause, meaning each fighter would be allowed to gain as much weight as possible after the official weigh in.
T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was announced as the location of the fight in June and will mark the first time GGG has fought in Nevada.
