Carmen Las Vegas Tickets
The Ballet Carmen
Carmen is a ballet inspired by the torrid 1845 novella by Prosper Merimee. This version is a new production of the original premiered by the Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater (LVCDT).
The history of Carmen as a ballet is long and complicated. Marius Petipa (1818-1910), a ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer, created a ballet from the novella around the time of its first publication. Petipa is known as the most influential ballet master and choreographer in history. His many ballets include The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. However, there are no records of the score or choreography used for his Carmen.
In 1875, Georges Bizet composed his famous opera with a libretto written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy. More ballet interpretations emerged after the opera became popular, with many using parts of Bizet’s score.
In 1949, Roland Petit (1924-2011) created a notable production at the Ballets de Paris, in which the opera used the entire score for the first time in a ballet. However, the ballet’s story was based directly on the novel and not the opera. Petit was a ballet director, choreographer and dancer known for his creativity.
Alberto Alonso (1917-2007) created another notable version in 1967. He was a dancer and choreographer asked by Maya Plisetskaya, star of Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at the time, to create a ballet based on Carmen for her to dance. Alonso introduced a Cuban feel in his choreography. He also re-orchestrated the opera’s score, adding elements from other operas, changing instrumentation and, in the process, creating the Carmen Suite. This version of the ballet, still performed by the Bolshoi today, has entered the repertoire of many ballet companies around the world.
In LVCDTs production of Carmen, there is no shortage of interesting interpretation in the dance of the original story and inspiring opera to entertain you.
