Carolina Challenge Cup TicketsThe Carolina Challenge Cup is an annual preseason competition between some of the best clubs in American soccer. The idea for the Carolina Challenge Cup grew out of a series of preseason crossover games played between the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League and various Major League Soccer clubs. The inaugural cup in 2004 involved the Battery, the Wilmington Hammerheads from the second division of the USL and two MLS clubs — DC United and Columbus Crew. Young soccer star Freddy Adu, who was playing for DC United at the time, brought national attention to the event. More than 10,000 fans ultimately attended. The growing popularity of the Carolina Challenge Cup has mirrored the rise of American soccer as a whole. By 2014, the tournament had drawn in more than 14,000 soccer fans. When does the tournament take place? The Carolina Challenge Cup usually takes place during the preseason of American soccer in February. The 2019 tournament was held on February 16th, 20th and 23rd. There are currently no plans for a tournament in 2020, as the Charleston Battery is preparing to move into a new stadium. Keep an eye on StubHub for more information about when the Carolina Challenge Cup will return.
How many clubs play in the tournament? The Carolina Challenge Cup always features the host club — the Charleston Battery — plus three other MLS clubs. The precise clubs may differ every year depending on who’s invited, but DC United and Columbus Crew SC are some of the most frequent participants. Canadian clubs from the MLS have been featured as well. The results of the matches do not count toward the clubs’ regular season record. They are intended solely as practice and preparation for the regular season.
What is the format of the tournament? The Carolina Challenge Cup is a round robin tournament consisting of a single table. Each club is guaranteed to play everyone else once. The clubs receive three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. In order to reduce the amount of time the players spend on the pitch, each match that ends in a tie after regulation will not go into overtime. After the end of the three-game round robin, the club with the highest number of points is declared the winner. The score differential will come into play if multiple clubs finish with the same number of points.
Who was the winner of the last tournament?Columbus Crew SC was the winner of the 2019 Carolina Challenge Cup with five points and a 1-2-0 record. Even though the Chicago Fire finished with the same number of points, Columbus was declared the winner due to goal differential. This was the third consecutive cup victory for the Columbus Crew.
What is the venue like?Up until 2019, the Carolina Challenge Cup was held at the club’s old venue, the MUSC Health Stadium on Daniel Island. Any future matches in the Carolina Challenge Cup will likely be held at the club’s new venue, the Patriots Point Athletic Complex, which is the home of the College of Charleston Cougars soccer team. After undergoing various renovations, the venue has a seating capacity of approximately 3,900 spectators. It will be the home of the Battery until at least 2023.

Featuring the same round robin format, both MLS and USL clubs participate in the tournament.
