Settle in for rough ride with stiff USHL competition
Previously the North Iowa Huskies of Mason City, the club moved to Cedar Rapids (Iowa’s second-largest city) and became the RoughRiders in 1999, after a local teacher won a name-the-team competition. They play in the United States Hockey League alongside the likes of the Green Bay Gamblers, the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. A Tier 1 junior league, the United States Hockey League has produced a considerable percentage of professional NHL players, so keep a lookout for the next stars of the sport as you take your seat at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The stadium holds just under 4,000 RoughRider fanatics, producing a sea of green and white and all the chants typical of American sports. Grab a tasty hotdog, kick back and take in some incredible ice hockey. You can buy your Cedar Rapids RoughRiders tickets right here on StubHub, or, if you can’t make the game, you can sell them here too.
Historic highlights and notable NHL players
It didn’t take long for the RoughRiders to make an impact in Cedar Rapids. In the 2004–05 season, the team took first place in the East Division and tied with the Omaha Lancers (winners of the West Division) for the Anderson Cup – the overall season championship. They went on to face the Sioux City Musketeers in the play-offs and, after an intense series, defeated them at home to seal their first Clark Cup title. This squad featured a host of players who would go on to play NHL hockey, including Teddy Purcell (Edmonton Oilers, LA Kings, Tampa Bay Lighting), Alex Stalock (Minnesota Wild) and Justin Abdelkader (Detroit Red Wings). By 2019 the RoughRiders had won a further two Anderson Cups, and they’re always on the lookout for more success! Join their powerful stallion mascot, Ricochet, and cheer them on as they battle it out amongst some of the best junior players in the country. Just make sure to buy your Cedar Rapids RoughRiders tickets via StubHub before they sell out!
