Charley Pride is mainly known as a country music singer and guitar player. He is also a recording artist, performer, baseball player and business owner. His musical career took off in the mid-'70s, and he became one of the best selling performers for RCA Records. In fact, he came in second only to Elvis Presley. During his greatest success as a recording artist, 52 of his songs topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs, and 30 of those songs became No. 1 singles.
From Baseball Player to Musician
Charley Pride was born to poor sharecroppers in Sledge, Miss. When Pride was 14, his mother gifted him a guitar. He enjoyed playing it and eventually learned to master it. Although the love for music had already taken root in him, Charley decided to play baseball. He was part of the Negro American League in his early baseball years. In 1953, he started playing with the Boise Yankees, but he injured his throwing arm. While working with local baseball teams, Pride's voice made an impression on the team manager, who paid him to sing before their games. After this, he began playing solo gigs and combined gigs with the Night Hawks. While working at his smelter job, he once again injured himself when he broke his ankle, which forced him to switch his career direction once again. When Pride moved with his family to Great Falls, Mont., in 1967, his musical career took off. The family later moved to Texas to continue his work. Even before he began singing professionally, he was continuously encouraged to join the country music scene by popular country singers like Red Foley and Red Sovine. In 1958, Pride recorded songs for Sun Studios. The greatest breakthrough in his career came when he got a contract with Chet Atkins of RCA Victor. One of his first singles, "Just Between You and Me," was a great success that gave him a Grammy nomination the year after it was released and reached No. 9 on the country charts.
