Although the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic has been taking place annually for 35 consecutive years, the rivalry dates back much further, all the way to the first time the two schools met on the hardwood back in 1929. So far West Virginia has dominated the overall series and even won the first ever meeting between the two schools by a decisive 44-21 margin which still stands as the biggest victory in the history of the rivalry. Marshall and West Virginia are the only two Division I programs in West Virginia, a fact which has helped create such an intense rivalry.

The annual tradition of this rivalry game was begun in 1978 but it was not until 1992 that the game was moved to the neutral site of the state's capital, Charleston. Since then the Charleston Civic Center has been the home of the Chesapeake Energy Capital City Classic.
