A historic building in the middle of Medford Square, the Chevalier Theatre is one the largest theaters in the Boston area with a capacity of 1,856 seats. Known for its architectural design, the building's exterior is done in Greek Revival style while its inside features art deco style. The theater is also known for its great acoustics due to its gently curved interior walls. Originally built for the Medford High School as an auditorium, it was named in 1940 after Godfrey Chevalier, a Medford High School graduate who served as a World War I navy aviator. Its operations ceased in 1965 after the building caught fire. The city government of Medford used the venue as an administrative space until 1980. In 2017, Bill Blumenreich Presents took over theater management. It is a preferred venue for concerts, comedy shows and other live performances by artists visiting the city.
